DEEP TACTICS FOR DOG DAYS AT THE LAKE
The warm weather and complete lack of rain in the area has caused water temperatures to SOAR to 20C at 6ft. The majority of fish are now sitting in deep water and probable best area is likely to be Gateside Bay (reporting good catches), the Gap, Malling shore or Road Shore Deeps - with a di5 and a lure. Information is a little hard to come by at the moment as anglers are practicing for the AnglianWater 6 man team event. However there are reports of fish being caught all over the lake but it is hard. Some good bags have been reported from Gateside recently, fishing in 20 plus feet of water. The usual tactic is a Di 5 or more and letting it get down at least 20 feet with a big lure and bring it up through the fish. Black seems to be the most effective colour. Another tactic when the water is relatively clear and the weather calm is to fish buzzers deep on a sink tip and a very long cast. I also heard that the airflo di3/di5 line was successful the other night. Despite the nice hatch of sedge, mayfly and buzzer – dry fly has not been the best tactic.
In the Heat 5 of the SCOTTISH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS on 3/6/18, 33 anglers caught 16 fish. One of the poorest nights I can remember. Top team was Drumbowie FF with John Logan managing 4 of the clubs 5 fish. Also qualifying were Grizzlecats A (4 fish) and Kinross (A) with one (large) fish.
In Heat 4 of the FARIO FLY BOAT LEAGUE (also sponsored by ANDY SMITH OF SOUTHSIDE DECORATORS) on 30th May, Peter Cameron was top rod fishingon the Malling shore with floating line and buzzers. Keir Hardie is still at the top of the table. The 24 anglers boated 116 fish.
Well done to Gordon Ingles and WATERAID ANGLERS FOR RAISING £1000 for a Cambodian Orphanage.
