Lake of Menteith 10th July 2018

6ft Water Temperature – 21.5 C, Clarity (Secchi disc)3.5m.

Water temperature is still high and the fish are still down deep. Clarity remains exceptionally good and small flies (eg diawl bachs) will work at depth. The quoted ideal depth varies between 20 and 30ft with some folk even catching at 40ft. Some credible reports of success with a fast retrieve from depth. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE FISHING IS STARTING TO BE MORE RELIABLE with some great bags in the last few days. PERHAPS DUE TO THE FACT THAT as a result of holidays and heat wave the LAKE HAS HAD A MUCH REDUCED FISHING PRESSURE OF RECENT WHILST AT THE SAME TIME STOCKING HAS CONTINUED AT 1000 PLUS PER WEEK – AS WE HAVE NO ROOM IN THE HOLDING FACILLITIES. Yesterday Gus Armour had 18 fish and Stuart Inglis lost count but he knows it was more than 22. Stuart was fishing a gold head damsel on a fast sinker. Some big ‘lunkers’ have been boated. Alex Galloway netted this 6lb brownie – thanks for the photo Jim T. Some folk have also been catching in the deeps east of the GAP but Gateside seems to have the edge.

The good visibility is a good opportunity to spy out holding holes in the shallower water areas for later in the year.

In the FARIO FLY BOAT LEAGUE boat league Bill Ramage was top Rod with 10 trout (two boobies in the cages) and Craig Inglis was 2nd with 9 trout. 17 anglers caught 54 fish and there were 5 blanks.

In the Scottish Club Championships 33 anglers caught 96 trout. Top bag was Shane Kelly with 11 fish. Andrew Barrowman had 9. Allan Stephen was third equal with Gus Armour on 8 fish. All the action wasGateside. Top club was Tartan Tyers which included the first three named gentlemen. In second place were Neilston FF A team with 13 trout and 3rd were Newton St.Boswells with 14 trout.
