120th National Fly Fishing Champion – Ian Hutcheon

Ian Hutcheon of the Orkney Trout Fishing Association Stromness, was the winner of the 120th National Fly Fishing Championship Final at the Lake on a blustery Saturday 15th September. The strong westerly wind made fishing difficult but Ian from Kirkwall netted 10 fish for 21lbs 2.4oz to become the 120th Champ. Ian who works in for the Assessors Office (Council Tax and Electoral Register) was delighted to be taking the trophy back to Orkney. He fished Todhole, Lochend and Shear Point, moving down from a midge tip to a slow glass line. The fish took a biscuit booby (3), a candy booby (1), a black cruncher (5) and a cormorant (1). In second place was Scott Miller of Stanley and District AC with 9 fish for 20lbs 13.8oz – only 4.6 oz off the trophy. Scott was fishing a midge tip with 3 Diawl Bachs and a cat booby, and all his fish were taken on the diawl bachs. Scott had fish in the Heronry (2), Gateside (3), Hotel Bay (2), Shear Point (1) and Sam’s Point (1). Third placed was Jock Kettles with 10 fish for 20lbs 2.2oz. Jock was representing the Scottish Anglers National Association Competition Clubs and got his 10 fish on a Candy or cat booby – down the rope in Gateside Bay.

In all the 61 anglers weighed in 166 fish for 439lbs and returned a further 112 (total 278), giving a rod average of 4.6 trout for 12.2lbs.

The following top 18 individuals were also selected to fish in the forthcoming internationals at Bewl Water and the Lake in 2013. James Litster, Neill Barrett, Tam Burnett, Peter Auchterlonie, Craig Osborne, Ken Oliver, Kenny Sichi, Andrew Glasgow, Derek Purves, Kenny Miller, Ray Anderson, Brian MacKenzie, Alan Porteous, William Cowan and Allan Smith. Kenny Finlayson of Gartmore won the Dundee Silver Salver for the biggest fish (5lbs 6.6oz). SANACC treasurer Tom MacTaggart thanked the assistance of the Glasgow Angling Centre who provided the fly measures throughout the competition and heavily discounted the £320 worth of tackle vouchers that were awarded to the top three (more info at www.sanacc.org.uk).

Lake Stats for August
Analysis of the catch returns for August gave an average 2 man 8hr boat catch of 5.1 fish for 15.2lbs. Of these 28% were returned. This is the lowest catch and release monthly figure so far and reflects the relatively few competitions in August. Can I also remind anglers that it is important for stock health and management purposes as well as for angler interest that all released trout are recorded on the catch return sheet. The running average for the year for catch and release is 43.7%. The average weight of the trout in August was 3lbs.
