Lake of Menteith 2nd November 2011
NEWS FLASH The Arnprior to Port road (B8034) will be closed 8-4pm this weekend for repairs to Cardross Bridge.

Scottish Youth Fly Fishing Championship

This competition was held over two days at the Lake. Around 30 individuals took part on each day with the aim of qualifying for the national team. The winner was Calum Robertson - the angler with the highest aggregate placing over the two days. Calum who is 15 and from Lenzie, also took the trophy for the heaviest fish and the best newcomer. Calum had two fish on the Saturday, one of which was 4lbs 10oz and three fish on the Sunday. His predominant method? Slow intermediate line with a size 14 candy booby and cormorants, fished virtually static.

The Lake is now officially closed for the season but we have one last opportunity to fish for trout this year on Sunday 6th November for the Kirk and School Fundraiser.

We have 3 boats left. The fishing is from 12- 4ish and there is a BBQ, soup, refreshments, raffle, singing etc –after the fishing. A two man, all inclusive boat, is £40.

Below left Jim Law from Motherwell with a fine looking Rainbow and Douglas Ross from Maryburgh with an 8 pounder. The captor of the fish bottom left was camera shy.

The Lake is fishing better than I can remember for the time of year which bodes well for next year – unless it is the unseasonable mildness.

Unusual feathered visitor: Jim Twaddle tells me he saw a smew on the Lake last week – an unusual sight in this neuk of the woods.

Another two fine rainbows: Top is a cracker captured by David sibbald. Below, one of mine. More next week.
