The arrival of Anglian water team Jon Marshal and John Mees for the Scottish heats of the Team championships coincided with some “chilly for June” type conditions at the Lake – with high winds blowing from both east then west, confusing anglers and fish alike.
Scottish Club Championships
The lake fished its socks off on Saturday night. 48 anglers had a catch of 168 fish for 360lbs. The comp was fished to a five fish limit with no catch and release, and there were 23 limit bags. All areas of the lake seemed to be holding fish and dries and buzzer tactics were the order of the evening. Winning team with 15 fish for 33lbs 14oz were Hedgehogs (pictured left), with Famous Angler Whisky. Left to right are Craig Cowan (heaviest bag and heaviest fish), Paul Sharpe and Colin smith. 2nd were Alba Orvis with 15 for 33lbs 5oz and 3rd were Newtyle and Meigle with 15 for 26lbs 8oz. Craig Cowan was fishing in the dog Isle area, targeting rising fish on a midge tip line with FABS and dries.
Anglian Water Heats; Best bag on the Monday day heat was Craig Cowan of Leven Fly Casters who landed 10 fish and helped his team mates (Colin Smith, Bill Barnes, David Chalmers, Keith Doig and Paul Sharp) to first place and qualification for Thursday’s Final. Also through were Change A, Tweedside T’anglers, Perth RASC and Heron Fly Fishers. In the cool and windy evening heat, Grizzlecats were top team with 15 fish, 2nd were Team Sunburst – also with 15 fish, 3rd were Alba Orvis with 14 fish and James Gardiner with top bag of 7 fish, 4th Caley liners and the last team to qualify for the evening final on Thursday was Saltire Flyfishers. Rod average day heat 3.3, evening heat 2.0. The Anglian water heats at Menteith are being fished to a 2 fish kill, then barbless catch and release for 8, then time bonus. Still six bags of fish left in the car park last night. During the day and evening 321 fish were netted and 145 were returned.
Menteith Boat League: Brian MacKenzie was top rod with 14 fish – fishing dries at Gateside, Stable Point and the Rookery. The 22 anglers managed a rod average of 5.9.
