National Championship Final
On Saturday 12th September 2015 at the Lake of Menteith, 27 year old Stuart Marklow from Penicuik won the Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship.  Stuart, who fishes for Loanhead & District AC, netted 12 trout for 26lbs 3.8ozs to narrowly beat the 2010 Champion Peter Auchterlonie who had 12 trout for 25lbs 9.6ozs.  John Buchanan of Newton Mearns FF was third with 11 trout for 23lbs 1.6ozs

This was the 123rd National Fly Fishing Championship which was sponsored for the third time by Ridgeline UK and was contested over a series of 10 knockout heats and 6 semi finals.  A total of 361 anglers (Club Champions) took part in the Championship which in 2015 started back in April.

Stuart went to the Lake of Menteith on 30th April for his heat and qualified for the semi finals by finishing 24th of the 57 competitors there.  He went to Lintrathen Reservoir on 16th June for his semi final where he was 3rd equal of the 27 competitors.  This was only Stuart’s second attempt at the National Championship. 2014 was the first time that he had been entered in the National and he also made it to the final that year and finished 58th.

Anglers from clubs in the Borders right up to Orkney and Shetland had qualified to contest the 2015 final and with six of the last eight National Champions in the field along with eleven 2015 Scottish Internationalists it was a particularly hard final.  The Championship doubles as the qualifier for the Scottish Teams that will contest the 2016 Home Countries Internationals and Stuart will be in one of the teams that will be going to either Ireland or Wales.

The final was fished in cold, wet and blustery conditions and was fortunate to miss the torrential rain and 28mph winds that were forecast.

The heaviest fish caught was a beauty of 5lbs 13.8ozs and was caught by Kinross AC angler Ally Middlemass.  Ally had another two big fish in his bag and his 5 fish total  for 14lbs 14.4ozs was enough to secure him 18th spot and a place in the 2016 International Teams.
