Lake of Menteith Report 21/06/16

6ft Water Temperature   16C , Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.9m.

Some bright and breezy conditions have made things a little difficult on occasion over the past few days but things quickly improve when the wind drops. Ray Harrison and Frank Gillespie from Edinburgh had a beautiful soltice dawn on the Lake last weekend – as photographed by Paul Barr. Paul was lucky to get some close ups of the osprey has it picked up a fish from beside his boat. A picture he has been trying to get for many a year!

Reports from the anglers are that there is no shortage of fish out there – it is getting them to take that is the problem. For the last few weeks they have been offered buzzers then dries, now folk are having success also with small lures and wets. Recent areas reporting good catches have been Kate’s Brae, Gateside Bay and around the islands. The recent change of wind direction may lessen the fish numbers on the road shore and entice them upwind to the Malling and Gateside.

In the Boat League it was a good night with plenty of fish moving so floating and dries were the popular option (but the top rod likes to fish lures, especially his white cat - Ed). Katie's brae through Lochend to Todds hole were the best areas. The 27 anglers caught 146 fish averaging at 5.4 fish per rod. Top rod was Bill Ramage with 11 fish 2nd was Keir Hardie with 9 fish catching his 1st fish at 6:05pm and 3rd was Alec Galloway also with 9 fish but caught his 1st fish at 6:20pm. The £25 voucher from James Bayne tackle shop went to Bill Ramage, The Bottle of whisky from Andy Smith of Southside Decorators went to Alec Galloway and the Lake of Mentieth mug from our range of merchandise went to Graig Gibbons.

Heat 7 of Scottish Club Championship saw 12 teams competing including Port Ellen AC all the way from Isle of Islay. Conditions were excellent for fishing with a light wind and warm conditions.   Buzzers nymphs and dry fly were popular with the anglers, but the ever faithful Boobys and Fabs were flying all round the car park.   Road Shore, Kates Brae, Gravel Bank and Lochend were most popular at start of the evening.  100 trout were caught (rod average 3) with 49 being released for a total weight of 207lb 7.2oz   Top team on the night were Johnstone Fly Fishers trio of Messrs Alisdair Anderson (pictured on left) , Jordan Queen (pictured on right and Michael Ward pictured in the middle, with 18 trout for 37lb 0.  Closely followed by Rothes Oak also with 18 trout for 35lb 6.8oz.  Third place to RASC team with 13 trout for 27lb 1.9oz.  These teams to 1st semi final on 19th August. Commiserations to Tillicoultry team finishing in 4th place separated by 1.2oz. Top five individuals going forward to Champion of Champions on Friday 7th October at Lake (Michael Ward 8 trout, Gary Ormiston 8 trout, Bill Ramage 8 trout, Paul Cushnie  7 trout and Sandy Boag 5 trout).  Michael was at Kates Brae on the Road Shore using a midge line (3 ft tip) with Olive cruncher, diawl bachs and a skimpy black booby on tail. The winning captain received a Lake of Menteith engraved bottle of malt and bottles of the Beer of Menteith were also dispensed.
