Lake of Menteith Report 30/8/16

Secchi Disk 3m; 6ft Water Temperature 16C

Jimmy Coyne of Carron Valley Fishery
The angling community was saddened to hear of the passing of our friend Jimmy and our thoughts are with Jimmy’s Family at this time. The funeral will be held at Fintry Parish Church at 1pm on Tuesday 6th September and after at Denny Masonic Lodge.

Some calm and overcast days and a wee nip in the air at times has coincided with some great fishing. The fish can be seen on the surface all over the lake but areas which have been mentioned more than others are the Hotel Bay and Shear Point, Chicken Leg, the Heronry and Gateside. Reports of dries, crunchers and cormorants all doing well.

This fortnight’s catch return sheet draw winner of a free weekday boat is Dundee West End AC.

Scottish Club Semi Final Report by Kenny Miller
Friday saw second semi-final of Scottish Club Championship held at Lake of Menteith.  21 three man teams were competing, including 3 previous winners. Weather conditions were good, with a westerly wind. Most boats headed for Gateside Bay (cages) with a few trying Plantation, Rookery Point, Arnmach Point and International Bay.  The washing line method using cormorants or diawl bachs with Blob or FAB/Booby on tail seemed to be the preferred method.  Some anglers were trying dry fly using Shuttlecocks, hoppers or daddy long legs.   A few anglers were trying straight line buzzers in the quieter water. By end of the match a cracking return of 337 trout had been caught by the 63 anglers (rod average of 5.3) with 220 being released.  Total catch weight was 709lb 3.3oz.  Again the semi final was fished to a 2 fish kill then catch and release with 2lb weight being awarded to each returned trout.
Top team on the day was Lintrathen Fly Fishers "B" of Alan Ramshaw, Campbell Morgan and Barry Robertson who caught 32 trout for 66lb 0.1oz. Runners-up were Dows Fly Fishing Club trio of John Buchanan, David Mateer and Abigail Montgomery with 27 trout for 56lb 0.1oz.
