Lake of Menteith 18th March
6ft Water Temperature 4C , Clarity (Secchi disc) 1.7m.

Clarity has improved a little from last week but there is still a dark tinge to the water and no sign of the returning ospreys yet. Water temperature is 2 degrees warmer than this time last year. We have put in quite a sizeable pre-season stocking (over 1500) of mainly bows but some browns also. 1287 went in all over by boat and we tipped in another 250 in a secret location direct from the trailer.  I have estimated the average weight to be 1lb 12oz, with a range of 1lb 8oz to 5lb, have a look at the photo and see what you think….. The boot is holding the valve open btw). Everyone is saying what a mild winter it has been, and there was very little frost but water temperatures were for long periods below the margin for significant fish growth – so the stock fish are the usual size!

Opening Day this year is Saturday the 22nd March and it looks like you will need the thermals again. We are very pleased to welcome Terry Taylor, new minister to the Port and Aberfoyle area, who will officially open the season on Saturday morning. Apart from around 10 boats for those that we owe serious favours to, all the remaining  30 opening day boats were allocated to applicants by a draw of the hat. We hope you enjoy the spit roast1

Pike fishing has been a little disappointing although catches were up on the last day and a big 24lb girl was boated last Saturday.

The Lake Hotel is now running the café and we wish the Osprey Café good luck! They are finding their feet with regard to angler preferences, but currently on the menu are Breakfast rolls and tea/coffee etc from 8.30am to around 10am and stovies or similar at the end of the day. Call  the café on 07934 813374 (or email ospreycafe@hotmail.com ) if you are running late………..

The drogues have been repaired and replaced over the winter and we are now attaching them at a single point midships. It will therefore be necessary to pull in each time the boat is moved. Hopefully this will improve the quality of the drogues due to less shredding. They will also be easier to deploy.  We are continuing to replace engines (the vicious ones are away) with our current engine of choice, the short shaft mariner 4HP 4stroke. The only quirk of this engine is that it must be in forward gear before you can tilt up. For the wheelboat users we will have a new Honda 10hp electronic start shortly available – watch this space! We will also be switching shortly to a new catch and release style net which is arriving next week.

The Permit Office Tackle Shop will have an increased range of mainly terminal tackle available to supplement our tippet material and fly selection. We can order in items on request. Our main fly supplier is Iain Barr flies. Iain’s angling achievements are exceptional and his flies that he uses will be available at the Lake. We will also have other well known suppliers including Peter Batchelor and more to be confirmed. We are pleased to announce also that we will be stocking Dave Downie Fly Tying Materials. Davie’s materials are renowned for quality and he will be at the Lake in person on Sunday from 10 o’clock to demonstrate the tying of some of his favourite flies.

Pictured right from the Cabin window today - a female Golden eye. Summer resident or winter migrant?

The updated annual stats table above gives a brief overview of the fishery stocking and catches. From a total weight caught and total number point of view, last year was arguably our best to date. Harder to describe with stats though, was the tremendous buzzer hatches in the eastern basin with rises quoted as being the best seen. 2013 was a difficult year to beat in relation to angling at the Lake.
We have a busy year ahead with competitions as usual. Our flag ship competitions are the National Fly Fishing Championship and the Scottish club championships. In addition we have the Menteith Baynes Weekly Boat League, the Sierra Pairs, Troutmaster, Anglian Water, SANA Open and the Lexus European. As part of the Stirling International Fishing Festival in August we are hosting heats in aid of Help for Heroes and a Six Nations International Angling Event. The Cormorants Youth Club continues on a Tuesday.
Sincere best wishes to you all for the year ahead.
