I would firstly like to thank all the clubs and participating anglers who took part yesterday and made the day such a success. I would also like to thank my supporting Team Leaders, George Potts and Brian Stark for all their contributions to help make the day go as smoothly as it did.
Although this is a fiercely competitive competition, I'm delighted to say that it is also a fun day with many new friendships formed between all 3 teams. I would like to congratulate Gil Farid as the Top Rod of the day with a magnificent catch of 16 fish, all caught on dries. The new shield, which was generously donated by the Edinburgh & Leith A.C. was won by Eddie Fullarton for catching the 1st fish of the day at 9.33. I would also like to thank my boat partner, Paul Chambers for looking after me all day due to my shoulder injury and giving me a "Master Class" in how to fish dries. Paul was great company and always very supportive, and even giving me one of his most successful dries to use………In the last half hour !!! Paul was great company all day and I hope I've also managed to guide Paul into how to better maneuver the boat when setting up for a drift. 🤔🤣🤣
I would also like to give a special thanks to Quint and his Team for also looking after us with all the arrangements necessary to make the day go smoothly. Everybody was very complimentary with the curry this year which I personally thought was superb and very efficiently served by Conner and Douglas.
I was delighted to see the water clarity has dramatically improved over the last week with the Lake truly back to its 1st class status as the best fishery in Scotland and one of the best in the U.K. There's probably no more scenic a place to fish with such hard fighting fish that ripped line off the reel several times and looking like fresh run grilse, full finned fighting machines when finally netted. There was a total of 196 fish caught between 36 anglers, which I think speaks volumes of how the Lake has managed to turn things around from the hard days that we all experienced through the heatwave weeks. Dries were the order of the day with I'm sure, like myself, missing so many rises, but the pleasure of seeing a head come up to try to engulf your fly is for me the ultimate thrill of fishing a still water.
To my Glasgow Team, who all performed really well to mange to just pip Dundee, who I really thought had won it when the scores were coming in, but thanks to some big scores for Glasgow, from Gil, Gus Armour, Andy Smith, we managed to get over the line. Can I also add for those who weren't as successful as they probably hoped, firstly, nobody in the whole competition blanked, and as this is a team event, every single fish counts. All the one's two's and three's are the fish that get us over the line to a winning total.

ASSOCIATION of SCOTTISH STILLWATER FISHERIES DONATES £6800 to the SCOTTISH YOUTH TEAM/YOUTH NATIONAL RESULTS. The money will go into the Tom Taggart Memorial Account which was set up to help youngsters take part – when required. Pictured is Lake Fisheries Manager Quint Glen (AKA the last appointed ASSF Treasurer) handing the cheque over to James Litster of the Scottish Youth Team Management and onthe RHS winner of the Menteith Heat of the Youth National – Ruaraidh Fowler (results below). The ASSF is no longer operational and this parting gift was made possible by those who put so much effort into the ASSF in the past ….i.e. Morna Lahoar of Swanswater, Jonathon Swift of the now closed Markle Fisheries, Iona of Allandale Tarn and all the other ASSF past members who subscribed to the organisation including the Lake for many years.
The Lake had been fishing hard at times last week due to the water clarity (1.1m on the scchi disk; 6ft water temp 17.5C) but the catches were good for the competition with 28 youngsters catching 94 fish (3.4 rod average). Top rod was Ruaraidh with 9 fish from Sandy Bay/Gap/Heronry drifts and he was twiddling a slow glass line with two cormorants and a candy booby. In Second place was Jamie Walker also with 9 and 3rd Maria McGee with 8. Ruaraidh also won the Brown Bowl for top rod overall in Ireland at the recent Youth International. He is hoping to fund his travels with the Youth team next year to Wales by doing some guiding at the Lake. Well that’s the 2026 Menteith boat league sponsored by Fario Flies, over for another year. Congratulations to this Years winner is Bill Ramage his best nine scores out of fifteen totalled 22 points He Wins the trophy,£240 cash, a bottle of bubbly and a Fario flybox and 250 flies. Bill also nominated Strathcarron Hospice as the charity he want the charity money “£400” to go too. Second with 29 points was Alastair MacGilvery he gets £140 and third was Donnie MacBeth with 39 points and he received £40. The Alan Ronald memorial trophy gets decided by us and this year it went to most improved angler compared to last year and it went to Raymond Smith. On the last night it was you had to be in the right place at the right time, Grant Sutherland and Andy Kemp were, they were first and second with 10 and 7. grant said there was a big hatch of flying ants in the east basin round about when the eclipse was taking place so the put on a team of shuttlecock, third was George Charters. Robert Hastie wins the flybox with flies and Grant sutherland gets the voucher. The prize and Charity money comes the registration fee and the last night of the league gets split 50/50. On the penultimate night of the boat league sponsored by Fario flies, 12 anglers went out and caught 63 fish. In first place was Alastair Macgillivray with 13 fish, in second place was Bill Ramage with 7 fish and his first caught at 18.10 and in third place was Scott Henderson with 7 fish and his first at 18.18. Ali gets the fly box and a dozen fario flies and Scott wins the voucher for a free nights fishing.
Productive areas on the night were mainly up Malling shore and the cages with fish being caught on Boobies and dries.
Next week is the final evening, a few anglers have asked if we can start earlier so the timings will be out for 5.30pm and back in for 9.30pm for the presentation and some food and cakes.

FLY FISHING FOR PIKE NOW BACK ON Water temp at 6ft 18c; Clarity 1.3m The Lake is fishing really well just now (Top of the water) with cooler temperatures, light angling pressure and full stocking going on. In the FARIO FLY boat league – Bill has a commanding lead. Is the main interest the lochaber mens contest between Ali and Donnie in 2nd and 3rd place. Top bag on the night was Grant Sutherland with 12 on dries drifting from squirrel island to opposite the point of the rookery. Made a few changes to the spreadsheet and have gone by the rules as stated on the webpage. Best 9 evenings…so 4 poorer results taken off everybody. Only two were taken off last week??. I note there are actually 15 evenings not 14 as stated on the website…with the final on the 12th. Also a couple of other mistooks found in the spreadsheet and corrected. Lake is fishing it's socks off today with most boats well into double figures using a floating line and lures or dries at the head of the wind. We have removed the limit on catch and release. Yesterday the veterans 32 anglers caught 93 trout. Top rod was Jock Royan who caught his 12 fish mainly on dries.
